The JavaScript Rendering Problem
When Googlebot crawls a traditional HTML page, it receives the full content immediately. The page is ready to index as soon as it arrives.
JavaScript-rendered pages work differently. The initial HTML response contains minimal content — often just a loading spinner and JavaScript bundles. The actual content only appears after the browser downloads, parses, and executes the JavaScript code.
Google handles this through a two-wave indexing process:
Wave 1 (immediate): Googlebot receives the initial HTML and indexes whatever content is present in the raw source code.
Wave 2 (delayed): Google’s Web Rendering Service (WRS) executes the JavaScript and indexes the rendered content. This second wave can be delayed by hours, days, or even weeks depending on Google’s rendering queue.
The gap between Wave 1 and Wave 2 is the core JavaScript SEO problem. During that gap, your content is invisible to Google. And if the rendering fails — which happens more often than Google acknowledges — the content may never get indexed.
Which JavaScript Frameworks Cause SEO Issues
Not all JavaScript is problematic. The issues arise specifically with client-side rendering (CSR), where the browser (or Googlebot’s renderer) must execute JavaScript to produce the visible content.
Client-Side Rendered (CSR) — Problematic
- React (Create React App) — Pure CSR by default
- Vue.js (without Nuxt) — CSR by default
- Angular (without Angular Universal) — CSR by default
- Svelte (without SvelteKit) — CSR by default
These frameworks generate an HTML shell that contains only JavaScript references. All content is rendered client-side.
Server-Side Rendered (SSR) or Static — SEO-Friendly
- Next.js — SSR and static generation built in
- Nuxt.js — SSR for Vue applications
- SvelteKit — SSR for Svelte
- Astro — Static-first with optional client-side hydration
- Remix — SSR by default

How to Diagnose JavaScript SEO Problems
Check What Google Sees
- Google Search Console URL Inspection: Use the “View Tested Page” feature to see the rendered HTML that Googlebot processes. Compare it to what users see in a browser.
site:search: Searchsite:yourdomain.comand review cached versions of your pages. If the cached version shows less content than the live page, JavaScript rendering is failing.- Disable JavaScript in your browser: Use Chrome DevTools to disable JavaScript and reload your pages. Identify Content Dependencies
Audit your pages for JavaScript-dependent content:
- Main body text

Any of these elements that require JavaScript to appear are at risk of being missed or delayed in indexing.
Solution 1: Server-Side Rendering (SSR)
SSR generates the full HTML for each page on the server before sending it to the browser. The user (and Googlebot) receives complete content immediately, with JavaScript then “hydrating” the page to add interactivity.
When to Use SSR
- Dynamic content that changes frequently (e-commerce product pages, news articles)
- Content that needs to be indexed quickly
- Pages where content varies based on URL parameters
Implementation Approaches
If you’re starting a new project: Choose a framework with built-in SSR. Next.js (React), Nuxt (Vue), and SvelteKit (Svelte) all provide SSR out of the box.
If you have an existing CSR application: Migrating to SSR is a significant refactoring effort but often worth it. The migration typically involves:
- Setting up a Node.js server to handle page rendering
- Adapting your data fetching to work on both server and client

SSR Performance Considerations
SSR adds server-side computation. Each page request requires the server to render the HTML. This can increase Time to First Byte (TTFB) compared to serving static files. Mitigate with:

Solution 2: Static Site Generation (SSG)

Limitations

- Not suitable for user-specific or real-time content
Modern frameworks offer hybrid approaches — static generation for most pages with SSR for dynamic ones. Next.js’s Incremental Static Regeneration (ISR) updates static pages on a schedule without full rebuilds.
Solution 3: Dynamic Rendering
Dynamic rendering serves different content to search engine crawlers vs. human visitors. When Googlebot requests a page, the server detects the crawler’s user agent and serves pre-rendered HTML. Human visitors receive the standard JavaScript application.
When to Use Dynamic Rendering
- When SSR migration is too costly or complex for the current codebase
- As a transitional solution while planning a proper SSR migration
- For specific sections of a site that need crawler-accessible content
How It Works
- A service (like Rendertron, Prerender.io, or Puppeteer) runs a headless browser
- It renders the JavaScript-dependent pages and caches the HTML output
- When a known crawler requests a page, the pre-rendered HTML is served instead of the JavaScript application
- Human visitors continue to receive the normal JavaScript experience
Important Caveat
Google’s official documentation states that dynamic rendering is a “workaround” rather than a long-term solution. It’s not considered cloaking (as long as the rendered content matches what users see), but Google recommends migrating to SSR or SSG when possible.

Regardless of your rendering strategy, these practices reduce JavaScript SEO risk:
Critical Content in Initial HTML
Ensure these elements are present in the server-rendered HTML (before any JavaScript executes):

Clean URL Structure
Single-page applications often use hash-based routing (example.com/#/page) or client-side routing that doesn’t change the URL. Both create SEO problems:

Fix: Use HTML5 History API for clean URLs (example.com/about) and configure your server to handle direct access to all routes.

Lazy Loading Content
Lazy loading that hides content behind “load more” buttons or infinite scroll can prevent Google from indexing that content. If the content only appears after a user interaction (click or scroll), Google may not see it.
Solutions:
- Use paginated URLs that Google can crawl individually
- Implement HTML
<a>links to paginated pages alongside the “load more” functionality - Use Intersection Observer for lazy loading (Google’s renderer supports this)
Testing and Monitoring
